GEOMETRIC GAZES

Geometric Gazes (2022, WIP) is an exploration of human perception through abstract generative animation and creative programming (custom software). The aim of this project consist of immerse viewers in by embracing concepts such as optical illusions, hallucination, evocative gazes, and eye contact.

It was a great oportunity to explore the beauty of human eye and to decode

Hallucination can blur the boundaries between objective reality and subjective experience, prompting viewers to consider the malleability of perception and the role of the imagination in shaping our understanding of reality.

i focused on texture, grain, …

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

IDEA

This project is inspired by movies that have shots where eyes and looks have become iconic. Films such as Un Chien Andalou (1929), Blade Runner (1982), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Donnie Darko: The Director’s Cut (2004), Cube (1997), The Jacket (2005), and many others have in their footage extreme close-ups that frame the eyes in a particular and very creative way.

I wanted to explore the beauty of the human eye by decyphering its complexity and design from an abstract approuch. This complexity has fascinated scientists, artists and observers alike.

For centuries, artists have found a source of inspiration in human eyes. The way light reflects on them, the depth and expressiveness they convey, have been recurring themes in painting, sculpture, photography and other forms of art.

Each person has unique features in their eyes: color, shape, arrangement of the iris and pupil, among others. This uniqueness makes the eyes distinctive and attractive elements, since they reflect the individuality of each person. These were a wide potential set of parameters to experiment with in the field of generative art to generate unique abstract artworks.

The eyes are a window to human emotions. The ability to express a wide range of feelings, from joy to sadness to wonder, makes the eyes a powerful medium for non-verbal communication. I was curious to explore a wide range of abstract representations and perceive the grade of emotional connection through looking those gazes is achieved.

VISUAL RESEARCH

inspiration

For this project I was deeply rooted in the exploration of perception and the ways in which visual stimuli can influence the viewer’s experience. In this field I really admire Piero Dorazio and Bridget Riley works.

Dorazio’s paintings often incorporated optical effects, such as the use of contrasting colors and patterns, to create dynamic visual experiences. Another characteristic feature of Dorazio’s style was his use of intricate linear patterns, which added texture and depth to his compositions. These linear elements, often created through techniques such as brushwork or stenciling, contributed to the rhythmic quality of his paintings and enhanced their visual complexity.

Riley’s artworks often employ optical illusions to create the impression of movement, depth, and rhythm. Riley’s compositions typically feature repetitive patterns of stripes, curves, or other geometric forms. Color plays a crucial role in Riley’s artworks, as she often employs contrasting colors to intensify the optical effects in her compositions.

etching ouputs

I explored how etching abstrat generative can be a rich and versatile medium for creative expression, combining technical precision with artistic experimentation to produce visually captivating and emotionally resonant prints.

The sharpness of etched lines and the ability to control line thickness and depth make it possible to create intricate, highly detailed images with a high level of abstraction.
